About Me...
 |
My name is Haley Draper-Bowers. To
give you a little background about myself, I was born in El
Tigre, Venezuela and my family lived in different parts of the
world until we moved to the United States in 1988. I attended
high school and junior college in Roswell, New Mexico (no little
green aliens, I promise). During that time I enjoyed visiting
Ruidoso, NM and the surrounding areas with friends. There are many
fun things to do in New Mexico but I always wanted to live
in Texas. |
I transferred to Texas Tech
University in Lubbock, TX in 1996 as an Honor's student and
earned my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts; both in
Communication Studies. I went to several home football games
and even lost my voice once rooting for the team!! =) I lived
in Lubbock for over ten years; teaching communication classes
such as Public Speaking and Business and Professional
Communication at Texas Tech. I moved to Dallas for a year to
work for Department of Justice at the Office of the Inspector
General. We performed job audits and wrote reports for the
government. I also worked at
a non-profit environmental organization called ICASALS
(International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Land Studies).
This non-profit organization focused on international water
issues and environmental science. We worked with geologists and
professors from the Middle East, Africa and South America in an
attempt to streamline academic efforts with funding from
governments and business initiatives. Our main goal was to
improve the education and resources for other organizations that
wanted to help developing countries provide clean water to
people.
My husband and I married and left for
Missouri in 2006 where he had accepted a teaching assignment. We
enjoyed living in that beautiful state for two years and decided
to come back home to Texas in 2008. With over ten years of
experience teaching college level communication courses I now
work for Odessa College in Odessa, Texas. My husband (Dean)
also teaches college for Odessa College. He has his PhD in
English so he teaches Composition, Literature and Fiction
courses. I keep busy teaching communication classes and running
the Speech and Debate Team with Mr. Jeremy Sanchez. I feel very
lucky that I get to be a part of students' academic experience
and that I have variety in my teaching assignments. Education
was a natural choice for me since I have always had a passion
for life-long learning and I try to pass that along to my
students. Also, I am the
mother of four cats and I love animals. I am a member of the
Odessa College Ecology Action Committee that is helping Odessa
College go green and promoting good environmental management at
our campus.
